Tee Time
Originally seen in the early 1800s as clothing worn for labourers, the T-shirt has done the fashion miles. Today it takes on many forms in luxury fashion whilst also being a wardrobe staple for pretty much all of us. Far from only being worn with jeans and a pair of pumps, this versatile garment can be styled in countless ways to create the perfect look, opening up a wide array of possibilities to be creative and think outside of the style box.
There are over 28 styles of t-shirts to be found today. Here, I will write about the ones you are likely to find without a headache. When we look at ‘styles’ of t-shirts, we are looking at the neckline, the sleeve length and the fit. Its easy to see why we now have so many variations on the classics. So a reminder of the styles below and then i will give you tips on how to find the style which suits you best.
Crewneck
For a classic type of neckline for women, look no further than the crewneck. This rounded, slightly scooped neckline is often found on casual T-shirts and sweatshirts. It's particularly flattering on those with long, thin necks.
V-Neck
Another classic and universally flattering neckline is the V-neck. It creates the illusion of a longer neck and torso by drawing the eyes inward. They look good on everyone, but V-necks are especially flattering on petite women with apple-shaped bodies and short torsos.
Deep V-Neck
A deep V-neck is a dramatic, low-cut neckline that shows off your neck and chest while elongating your frame. If you want to look your best, you'll want to be sure to have the right bra, as well as some fashion tape. To enhance the look of a deep V-neck, consider adding a delicate necklace that falls just below the collarbone. This will draw attention to your neckline and add a touch of elegance. Additionally, statement earrings can help to balance out the look and bring focus to your face.
Jewel Neck
While you may not be familiar with the name, there's a good chance you've seen the jewel neckline many times before. This high, rounded neckline sits at the base of the neck and is often found on simple tees and informal dresses.
The Polo
Polo shirts have a stand-up collar, a button placket and are often slightly fitted. Being shaped not only adds a touch of femininity to the design, but it also enhances the overall appearance and flatters the female figure. This helps to create a more stylish and fashionable look, making the polo shirt suitable for various occasions beyond just sports wear.
Boat neck
Boat necklines sit just past your collarbones and are a staple of Old Hollywood. Although they flatter all figures, they are especially flattering to those with small busts and pear-shaped bodies. Moreover, boat necks draw the eyes outward and can create the illusion of better posture.
Scoop Neck
A scoop neckline is similar to a boat neck, except it sweeps lower and it's not as wide. A scoop-neck t-shirt is a flattering option for everyone. By highlighting your collarbones, they can give the illusion that your neck is longer and leaner.
Collar Neck
There are many popular clothes with collar necks, and t-shirts are one of them. Having an open neckline on collared tops gives you more breathing room while maintaining a sense of chic professionalism. It's a great choice for people with small busts, narrow shoulders, or long faces.
Square Neck
A square neck features a squarish design, as its name suggests. A square-neck top can make your neck appear longer, emphasize your collarbones, and contrast your curves. Fun and retro, it's an ideal style for women with short necks or narrow shoulders, curvy hips and large busts.
Split Neck
It looks like a cross between a crewneck and a V-neck, but split-necks are also commonly seen on collared tops. Split-necks can be styled in a variety of ways, making them a versatile choice for any outfit. They can be paired with statement necklaces for a chic and dressy look, or dressed down with a simple pendant for a more casual vibe. Additionally, split-necks can be layered with a cardigan or blazer for a polished and professional ensemble.
Sweetheart Neck
Traditionally, sweetheart necklines look like the top part of a heart. Necklines with this vintage style sit lower on the neck, highlighting the collarbones, neck, and shoulders. In addition to balancing broad hips, it can soften a square jawline, highlight cleavage, and enhance a long, thin neck.
Turtleneck
Known for its timeless style, the turtleneck extends high up the neck and ends just under your chin. Necklines like this are great for showing off long necks and narrow shoulders. When accessorizing a turtleneck outfit, consider adding a statement necklace or a chunky belt to accentuate your waist. You can also pair it with a wide-brimmed hat or a stylish scarf to add a touch of elegance and personality to your look.
Mock necks
Unlike a turtleneck, a mock neck extends past collarbones and up the neck, but it's not as high (typically just an inch or two). A mock neck is a versatile option for layering, as it provides just enough coverage to keep you warm without feeling too constricted. It's perfect for wearing under sweaters, blazers, or jackets, adding an extra layer of style and comfort to your outfit. Additionally, the lower height of the mock neck allows for more flexibility in choosing accessories like scarves or necklaces to complement your look.
Halter
The halter neck top is typically a sleeveless style that wraps around the back of the neck. With this neckline, you can show off your arms and shoulders in warm weather. As well as bringing attention to the bust, halter necks accentuate your curves and posture. When it comes to accessorizing a halter neck top, opt for statement earrings or a delicate necklace to draw attention to your neckline. A stack of bangles or a chic bracelet can also add some flair to your wrists. Additionally, pairing the top with high-waisted jeans or a skirt can create a stylish and balanced look.
Strapless
In spring and summer, strapless dresses and tops emphasize your entire neck, shoulders, and collarbones. Choosing this style will show off your arms or give broad shoulders a balanced appearance. Those with smaller busts may find this style more flattering since it offers minimal bust support.
One Shoulder
One-shoulder necklines make a dramatic statement with their asymmetrical designs. For people with narrow shoulders and square bodies, it is especially flattering. There are several types of one-shoulder necklines to choose from, including diagonal, draped, and cut-out styles. Each of these variations adds a unique touch to the asymmetrical design, allowing individuals to find the one that best suits their body shape and personal style.
So with all these different styles, where do you start? In short choosing the perfect t-shirt for women involves considering your body shape, fabric preferences, neckline options, sleeve lengths, colour and pattern choices, as well as the fit (relaxed / fitted/ oversized) and the size (size varies brand to brand). So there is quite a lot to consider.
A extra tips which you might not have thought of;
Focus on the fabric
Comfort, longevity, and functionality of a t-shirt are influenced by the fabric. Polyester, for example, wicks moisture, while cotton, for example, breathes well. Natural fabrics are softer against the skin and eco-friendly, whereas synthetic fabrics are durable and colorfast.
Choose a style which suits your body shape
The t-shirt has to tick several boxes to suit our body shape. A previous blog on my site helps you work out your body shape if you aren’t sure.
Colour counts
As an Colour Analyst, i will of course say that colour is key. I do agree that there can be nothing more chic and versatile as a classic black or white T. If a bright white doesn’t suit look you for soft white.
Necklines
There are so many necklines to cover and I don’t want you to fall asleep on the blog. I have covered the main ones. My advice, get the right bra which fits without digging in and is supportive should you decide to hit the dance floor.
Sleeve length
This is a game changer as to if a t-shirt works for you or not. Sleeves can either show off our best assets or hide our least. Try and make sure that the sleeve end isn’t the same level as the nipple. This could make you look top heavy when you don’t need to.
Quality counts
Essentially buy the best quality you can afford and think about how much wear you need to get out of the item. To identifying if a t-shirt is high quality, look for reinforced seams, superior stitching, and durable fabric. Assess fabric weight, texture, and construction. Quality t-shirts exhibit colour fastness, shape retention, and a luxurious feel.
